Recall alert: 2 million brand name dehumidifiers recalled nationwide

Roughly 2 million dehumidifiers sold at a variety of retailers nationwide under nearly two dozen brand names have been recalled due to overheating concerns that can pose fire and burn hazards.

According to the recall notice, the affected dehumidifiers were sold at Lowe’s, Costco, Walmart and Menards, among other retailers, between February 2009 and August 2017 for between $120 and $430.

The manufacturer, New Widetech, has fielded reports of 107 incidents to date of the products overheating and/or catching fire, resulting in about $17 million in property damage, the recall stated.

No injuries linked to the recall have been reported, the company stated.

In addition to the U.S. products, an estimated 380,000 of the dehumidifiers were sold in Canada, and another 25,000 were sold in Mexico.

The recall affects a wide range of sizes and brand names, including AeonAir, Amana, ArcticAire (Danby), Classic (Danby / Home Hardware Stores), Commercial Cool, Danby, Danby Designer, Danby Premiere, De’Longhi, Edgestar, Friedrich, Generations (Danby), Haier, Honeywell (JMATEK / AirTek), Idylis, Ivation, perfect aire, SuperClima, Whirlpool and Whynter.

Consumers are advised to stop using the dehumidifiers immediately and contact New Widetech for a refund that will be prorated based on the age of the product, the recall stated.
