Police said the unidentified man heard two people speaking Spanish to each other on July 23 at a gas station and “told them that they don’t belong here,” The Associated Press reported.

Officials said he then followed the pair to their car and doused them with gas from the pump. The man appeared to look for something to light the gas but couldn’t find one, KUSA reported.

One of the victims told police that the man punched the other person before the man picked up a rock that he used to smash the rear window of their car.

“I was scared, but I couldn’t turn my back on him because he would knock me down,” the person told KUSA in Spanish. “Now imagine that. He would have finished me. I don’t know what was going on with him.”

Police said that after the man smashed the window, he took the pair’s keys before leaving the station, the AP reported.
