Gov. DeSantis says teachers, law enforcement will be able to get COVID-19 vaccines “very, very soon”

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Governor Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday that teachers and sworn law enforcement officers over the age of 50 will soon be able to receive the coronavirus vaccine.

The vaccines would be distributed at federal vaccination sites that will open next week, according to DeSantis. One of those sites will be at the Gateway Mall on Jacksonville’s Northside.

DeSantis also said that as the vaccine supply increases and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine gets approved, even more people will be able to receive the vaccine in the coming months.

“We still have seniors to do. That’s still the priority but we can take some and really knock out a lot of these folks potentially pretty quickly. So we’re going to start for sure on these federally supported sites as new vaccine comes online then we will see what happens,” DeSantis said.

There is no set timeline for when the expansion will go in place.

“I think we’re going to have the ability to do that between these federally supported sites, and some of the new vaccine that may be coming online, very, very soon,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis said the state is getting close to vaccinating 2.5 million seniors and says he’s hopeful that COVID-19 numbers will continue to decrease.
