Outdoor security footage from a neighbor in the area, which was provided to Action News Jax, shows police speeding into the parking lot after JSO says they heard of a nearby robbery over the radio.
“We heard the gunshots, it was so loud. We thought it was outside the windows and the kids were scared they woke up,” she said.
The neighbor didn’t want her face shown on camera, but told Action News Jax there’s been an uptick in crime here.
“It happens a lot around here, a lot. Even with police presence, doing it in broad day light,” the neighbor said. “So, its scary. Especially when its right outside your window its something to worry about.”
JSO says the suspect, 37-year old Daniel Newton Neil, was armed.
Police say Neil ran across the street into another apartment complex and that’s when he passed by one of JSO’s surveillance officers.
“The detective was very audible and he said police stop police stop several times,” T.K. Waters, JSO Chief of Investigation said.
“At that point, the suspect ran to an apartment building and attempted to enter, he was armed with a firearm.”
JSO says the gun Neil had was reported stolen from a vehicle in 2020.
Detective JG Bennett fired and struck Neil with two shots.
The neighbor said constantly having to worry about crime is tough on her and her kids.

“I think it’s something they definitely think about at night when they go to sleep at night, I mean it could be a bullet going through your window.”
