Democratic leaders say Governor DeSantis owes them an answer on Women’s Reproductive Rights

Jacksonville, Florida — Florida Democratic leaders are in Jacksonville to say it’s time to get answers from Governor Ron DeSantis in order to protect women’s reproductive rights. The state officials say people can have their voices heard by voting.

Florida State Senator Audrey Gibson says DeSantis has his eyes on the White House and doesn’t see what he’s doing to the women of Florida.

Senator Gibson says the recent bill, signed by DeSantis over a month ago, doesn’t have exemptions for pregnancies caused by rape or incest and that endangers women.

Gibson says, “I am woman who believes in freedom and the right to privacy guaranteed in the Florida constitution to all Floridians. And I believe, all includes women.”

Democratic State Representative Tracie Davis, joins Gibson in her concerns over the governor’s actions, regarding women’s reproductive rights.

Davis adds, “To force survivors, like Senator Gibson said, of rape, human trafficking, incest to carry a fetus to full-term is simply just cruel.”

Both Senator Gibson and Representative Davis agree that women in Florida are outraged and their voices will be heard at the ballot box in this current election cycle, as well as, in November of 2024.

When signing the bill, Governor DeSantis said, “this will represent the most significant protections for life that have been enacted in this state in a generation.”

The bill, which took effect on July 1st, does allow for up to 15 weeks of pregnancy, giving a woman time to choose whether or not to terminate the pregnancy.

Advocates in favor of the bill believe that is adequate time to make that determination.

In addition, the bill also has an exemption for an abortion if the mother’s life is in danger to prevent serious injury and if the unborn fetus has a fatal abnormality.
