Andra Day as Billie Holiday in ‘The United States vs Billie Holiday’

The United States vs Billie Holiday is streaming now on Hulu. The Lee Daniels directed film is one of TIME’s “Most Anticipated Movies of 2021″.

Andra Day says in a CBS interview that she tried to back out of the role that is her feature-acting debut; the role of portraying legendary jazz artist, Billie Holiday. She says she didn’t want to “suck”. Well, critics obviously believe she slayed the role. Day is nominated in the Best Actress in a Drama category for a Golden Globe. The 3-time Grammy nominee is up against Viola Davis, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand, and Carey Mulligan.

Here’s a brief synopsis of The United States vs Billie Holiday from the filmmaker: The legendary Billie Holiday, one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, spent much of her career being adored by fans across the globe. Beginning in the 1940′s in New York City, the federal government targeted Holiday in a growing effort to escalate and racialize the war on drugs, ultimately aiming to stop her from singing her controversial and heart-wrenching ballad, “Strange Fruit.” The biopic is an intimate tale of a fierce trailblazer whose defiance through music helped usher in the civil rights movement.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association gave the film a nod in another category, Best Original Song for “Tigress & Tweed”. The Golden Globes airs Sunday at 8 pm on NBC.
