We have all witnessed the horrible images of flooding and utter devastation along the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Harvey.
The storm could end being one of the costliest in American history. Cleanup and recovery will be a years-long effort.
As we have witnessed the heart-wrenching stories, many have wondered how they could help. With such a large-scale disaster, it can be hard to figure out where to start.
We at Cox Media Group Jacksonville were asking that question and began to actively mobilize our partners. We feel for our neighbors, and we know that using our reach on Radio and CBS 47/Fox 30 Action News Jax that we can appeal to Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.
We turned to the Salvation of Northeast Florida to ask what they needed. The answer was money. It is far too soon to collect and deliver items. That day will eventually come. Money will make the biggest immediate, direct impact.
So we created a 12-hour radiothon, “Help for Harvey”, to raise money for the local Salvation Army to restock their mobile disaster canteen. The canteen has been deployed to Texas, and our goal is to help replenish the supplies so that thousands of people can have a warm, prepared meal.
The Salvation Army estimates it costs $13,000 per day to feed 1,500 people three meals from the canteen. Our goal is to feed as many people for as many days as possible.
That is where you come in. We need you to call our radiothon from 5am-5pm on Thursday, August 31st. The phone number is (904) 697-3326. Every dollar makes a difference, and the more you donate the more people YOU will help to feed.
